WATER LOTUS (Nelumbo)
Water lotus are perennials and are considered sacred in Buddhists beliefs. They are available as tubers from late March until late May or early June. The water lotus have large blooms and leaves that stand out of the water from 2' to 5' and vary from as little as 3" long up to 18" long depending on the variety. The larger varieties have leaves capable of reaching 2' in circumference and giant flowers up to 12" in diameter. The smaller varieties can have leaves and flowers as small as 2" - 3", but still require a spacious container to be able to spread out and reach their full potential. Lotus need to be planted when the water temperature is at least 70F and usually take a year before they begin to flower. Once the tubers are planted, it can take a year or two before they become fully established. All varieties listed below are full sunlight.

Asiatic Alba
(Grandiflora) This white lotus has 9" to 10" flowers and 18" to 22" leaves. The leaves are 4' to 5' above the water. It is a very fragrant lotus and has cup shaped flowers.

(Shirokunshi) The fragrant white blossoms grow about 1' to 2' tall. It is a very free blooming plant once it gets established. Flowers are about 7" across and the leaves are 12" to 14".

(Russian Red) The red blossoms of this lotus have a slight fragrance. The leaves are about 20" across and grow 3' to 5' out of the water. Use a large pot for this lotus.

This is one of the best blooming lotuses. The flowers are double pink. Leaves are about 12" and stand about 2' high. Flowers stay open later in the day and it has a long blooming season.

This lotus is a very good bloomer. The flowers are about 6" across and the leaves are 10" to 12". It is very free flowering and should produce blooms the first season.
